At 14, Laura Dekker was fighting two battles: one against the raging Atlantic, the other against her own government. Both tried to stop her dream—neither succeeded.
Dekker, born with a love for the sea, had been sailing since a young age, dreaming of becoming the youngest person to sail solo around the world.
Her ambition, however, faced a significant obstacle. Concerned for her safety, Dutch courts intervened, placing her under state care for ten months.
Despite these legal challenges and global scrutiny, Laura regained parental custody in July 2010. She set sail just a month later aboard her 12.4-meter ketch, *Guppy*.
Her demanding voyage spanned 518 days and 27,000 nautical miles.
She bravely navigated vast oceans and challenging conditions, making stops in places like the Canary Islands, Panama, and Australia.
Laura Dekker completed her solo circumnavigation on January 21, 2012, at the age of 16.
While some sailing organizations do not officially recognize ‘youngest’ records to discourage exceptionally risky attempts, Dekker’s feat remains widely acknowledged.
Her perseverance through storms at sea, loneliness, and bureaucratic hurdles ashore cemented her story as one of remarkable determination.
